Representative “Hank” Broege worked his way through college where he achieved one of the several degrees he holds in Labor Studies. During that time, he also got involved with Labor by formatting updates for Union websites, taking photographs while attending Labor-focused rallies for the NYC Central Labor Council, and shadowing organizers at various CUNY colleges. After graduating, Hank continued his path toward Labor by working as an Organizer with another NYC Union.
In 2021, Hank applied for and was hired into UFCW Local 2013 as a Union Representative in Training. During his training process Hank worked hard and pushed himself to expand his knowledge and gain experience to develop a sound skillset as a Union Representative.
As a Union Representative, Hank travels throughout the Tri-state area representing workers at various worksites and in various industries; he interacts daily with Shop Stewards in the Duty of Fair Representation ensuring members’ rights are upheld under the terms of their respective Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA’s). Hank has worked to thoroughly investigate and move merit-based grievances as needed, working to find resolution to contractual violations. In doing so, he has been able to achieve reinstatement where members were wrongfully terminated as well as recovering back-pay that was due in those instances. Additionally, Hank works to assist in New Member Orientations at locations when/where new members are hired and works to help identify contractual improvements that will benefit members in the respective workplaces/industries.
Hanks view on his work is simple – “It’s about seeing someone else’s struggle as your own” … Hank takes his responsibility for our membership seriously and works hard to ensure they have someone willing to fight on their behalf.
